Water Research Laboratory

The Water Research Laboratory is used for online water quality monitoring and modeling in a pilot-scale drinking water distribution network, as well as for studies on the detection of uncontrolled and excessive water consumption in a basic water distribution system using smart water meters, various equipment, and software. The laboratory is also employed in research on water pollution and control in surface and groundwater sources. A general view of the laboratory is presented in Figure 1.

In 2019, as part of a TÜBİTAK-supported research project, a basic water distribution network was established in the laboratory. The system includes a smart water meter with a GSM communication module, a remotely controlled shut-off valve, a pressure gauge, a recirculation tank to allow continuous closed-loop operation, a water pump, and a proportionally controlled valve. Additionally, an electromagnetic flowmeter available in the laboratory was integrated into the system (Figure 2).

The smart water meter in the basic water network is programmed to transmit water consumption data measured at 1-hour intervals via the GSM network. Later, modules with different communication systems and two volumetric meters were added to the network. In its final configuration, the laboratory network can transmit data simultaneously using three different meters connected in series and three distinct communication systems. Visuals related to this project are presented in Figure 3.
