Introduction

  • History

  • Our department was established in 1997. Undergraduate education began in the 1998–1999 academic year. In 2009–2010, optional English-supported courses were introduced. Starting from the 2014–2015 academic year, a new system was implemented in which at least 30% of courses are taught in English, along with a compulsory preparatory class. Our students can also benefit from Double Major/Minor programs.

The Master's program started in 1999–2000, and the Doctoral program was launched in 2005–2006 as a joint program with Süleyman Demirel University’s Department of Environmental Engineering. Since the 2020–2021 academic year, the Doctoral program has been carried out independently by our department with its qualified academic staff and infrastructure.

Introduction

Environmental Engineering is a discipline focused on the sustainable use of natural resources such as air, water, and soil; controlling and mitigating factors that cause pollution; and promoting sustainable development. With the rapidly increasing environmental problems worldwide and growing awareness of environmental protection, the responsibilities of Environmental Engineers continue to expand.

Our department, aware of these responsibilities, not only provides education but also conducts scientific research, develops practical projects, and provides consultancy and measurement services to industrial facilities and public institutions. Since the start of undergraduate education in 1998–1999, our department has been committed to science and sustainability with a dynamic and continuously updated faculty.

Ongoing research areas in our department include:

-Water pollution and control
-Water supply and wastewater disposal
-Solid waste management
-Marine discharges
-Environmental modeling
-Remote sensing and GIS
-Air pollution and control
-Renewable energy sources
-Environmental biotechnology

The department has two undergraduate laboratories for Environmental Engineering Chemistry and Environmental Microbiology courses, and four fully equipped research laboratories available for graduate students and researchers.

  • Mission

  • The mission of the Environmental Engineering Department is to provide world-class education for a livable environment, produce solutions to local and global environmental problems, raise environmental awareness in society, and educate contemporary environmental engineers who understand and can address environmental challenges.

  • Vision

  • Our vision is to be a program that:

  • -Offers world-class Environmental Engineering education
  • -Analyzes, evaluates, and designs solutions to modern environmental problems
  • -Operates and manages environmental systems
  • -Follows and advances scientific and technological developments
  • -Works towards sustainable development and clean production goals
  • -Trains highly qualified researchers through graduate education
  • -Educates responsible, communicative, confident, ethical, and continuously improving environmental engineers
  • -Maintains a faculty committed to practical application, research, ethics, education, and social-cultural values

  • Educational Objectives

  • Graduates will:

  • -Work as distinguished engineers in national or international companies (including public sector) addressing environmental pollution issues
  • -Participate in academic research at universities or R&D centers
  • -Continue their professional and academic development through lifelong learning and graduate education

  • Program Goals

  • The department aims to educate individuals who:

  • Have a solid foundation in basic and engineering sciences and environmental engineering principles
  • Can design and implement engineering solutions for air, water, and soil protection and improvement
  • Conduct research and develop projects with societal and environmental awareness
  • Can work in teams, manage projects, and communicate effectively
  • Understand professional ethics and societal responsibilities

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply mathematics, science, and engineering knowledge to solve complex environmental engineering problems
  2. Design experiments, collect and analyze data, and interpret results
  3. Work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
  4. Communicate effectively in writing and orally, including in a foreign language
  5. Understand the importance of lifelong learning and stay updated in science and technology
  6. Apply ethical principles and standards in engineering practice
  7. Understand project management, risk management, and sustainable development
  8. Evaluate the societal, environmental, and legal impacts of engineering solutions

  • Career Opportunities

  • Environmental engineers primarily work on solutions for air, water, and soil pollution. They apply engineering, biology, chemistry, and mathematics principles in waste management, water and air treatment, and public health projects. Graduates may:

  • -Design, build, and operate waste disposal and water treatment facilities
  • -Develop air pollution control systems and conduct air quality modeling
  • -Establish environmental management systems and recycling programs
  • -Prepare Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports and develop clean technologies
  • -Work in government ministries, municipalities, universities, and private companies

  • Graduates can work in institutions such as:

  • -Ministry of Environment and Urbanization
  • -Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources
  • -Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
  • -Ministry of Industry and Technology
  • -State Hydraulic Works (DSİ)
  • -TÜBİTAK, EPDK, MTA, TKİ, TPAO, TAEK, TÜİK
  • -Local municipalities and provincial environmental offices
  • -Universities and research centers
