External Unit Internship – General Information

Students enrolled in our department are required to complete a total of at least 60 working days of internship in relevant public or private institutions in order to reinforce the theoretical knowledge and experience they gain during their studies, develop their practical skills, understand workplace workflow processes, and become familiar with and able to use new technologies.

The internship is carried out in two periods, each consisting of 30 working days.

The first internship period covers practice-oriented subjects such as laboratories/treatment plants, while the second internship period focuses on office-based work.

The practical internship includes hands-on work conducted in the operation units and laboratories of public or private institutions that contain at least one of the following: industrial wastewater treatment plant, wastewater collection and sewerage network, municipal wastewater treatment plant, drinking water treatment plant, drinking water distribution network, solid waste storage and processing facility, incineration plant, industrial flue gas treatment plant, or electrical/power generation plants, as well as in organizations providing laboratory services.

The office internship includes work carried out in public or private institutions that design water/wastewater/flue gas/solid waste treatment plants, prepare environmental impact assessment reports, or provide environmental consultancy, waste collection, and recycling services.

The minimum internship duration at any institution is 15 working days.

The practical internship is completed during the vacation period following the 4th semester, and the office internship is completed during the vacation period following the 6th semester.

Students take the internship course (CEV400) in the 8th semester.

To begin the first internship period (practical internship), the student must have taken the courses Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, and Environmental Microbiology.

To apply for the office internship, the student must have successfully completed the practical internship.

It is not recommended for students to complete their internship during the semester or mid-term break. Students who wish to do so due to valid reasons (graduation, single course, etc.) must apply to the Department Internship Committee with a petition stating their request and justification (a current transcript and a document showing the courses taken during the semester must be attached). Evaluation and final decisions regarding the student's request are made by the Department Internship Committee.

Students applying to complete an internship during the semester must not have attendance requirements for any courses during the period they wish to intern.

Students may complete their internship during the Summer School on days when they do not have mandatory class attendance. Students who wish to do an internship during Summer School must be present at the internship site at least three weekdays per week. Students planning to take courses in Summer School but unable to meet the “at least three weekdays at the internship site” requirement may split their internship into two parts: at least 15 working days before Summer School and at least 15 working days after Summer School. However, the internship before and after Summer School cannot be completed at the same company.

Internships that do not comply with the rules stated above will be rejected by the Department Internship Committee.

To facilitate the internship procedures, an internship flowchart and internship procedures checklist have been prepared. These documents serve as guides and do not include all details of the process. It is strongly recommended that students carefully follow the guidelines provided on the internship pages of the department and faculty websites to ensure all internship procedures are completed correctly.
