History

Our department was founded in 1997, and undergraduate education commenced in the 1998-1999 academic year. In the 2009-2010 academic year, we introduced optional English-supported education. Later, in the 2014-2015 academic year, we implemented a new system, with a minimum of 30% of courses being taught in English, and also introduced a mandatory preparatory class. Additionally, students in our department have the option to participate in Double Major/Minor programs.

Our Master's program was initiated in the 1999-2000 academic year. Furthermore, the Ph.D. program was established as a joint program with the Department of Environmental Engineering at Süleyman Demirel University during the 2005-2006 academic year. Since the 2020-2021 academic year, the Ph.D. program has been conducted within our department, facilitated by competent and abundant academic staff, modern facilities, ample opportunities, and strong infrastructure.

Introduction

Environmental engineering is an engineering discipline that focuses on the best use of natural resources such as air, water, and soil, controlling and mitigating factors causing their pollution, and working towards sustainable development by preventing environmental pollution. With the rapidly increasing environmental issues worldwide, environmental protection awareness has been growing daily. This has led to an increasing responsibility for Environmental Engineers who work to solve these problems. Our department is conscious of this responsibility and aims to provide education and training while continuing scientific research and developing application projects to solve various environmental issues in our region, Turkey's tourism center. We also offer project, consultancy, and measurement services to industrial facilities and official institutions. Since the commencement of undergraduate education in 1998-1999, our department has been serving science with its dynamic faculty, focusing on sustainable environment and sustainable development. The ongoing research in our department is categorized under the following headings:

  • Water pollution and control
  • Water supply and wastewater disposal
  • Solid waste management
  • Marine discharges
  • Environmental modeling
  • Remote sensing and geographic information systems
  • Air pollution and control
  • Renewable energy sources
  • Environmental Biotechnology
  •

Our department has two student laboratories, the Environmental Engineering Chemistry Laboratory and the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, where undergraduate courses are conducted. Also, four well-equipped research laboratories are available for postgraduate students and researchers.
